Zambian music icon Macky 2 has been forced to clarify his position after facing backlash from fans over a social media post many interpreted as defending Yo Maps amid controversy surrounding the “Budget” music video.
The backlash began after Macky 2 shared a lengthy Facebook post describing Yo Maps as “one of the most genuine souls” of this generation, arguing that the singer’s positive contributions to society outweigh his mistakes.
In the post, Macky 2 praised Yo Maps for supporting young people, helping upcoming artists, buying his parents a car, and building a house for his grandmother. He urged the public to show mercy and avoid judging the artist based on one controversial moment.
However, many fans interpreted the message as a defence of the scenes in the music video that allegedly depict lesbian behaviour something that has triggered criticism from sections of the public and attracted concern from broadcasting authorities.
As criticism intensified online, Macky 2 returned with a second statement to clarify himself.
“I am NOT defending Yo Maps. AWE. Let me be loud about that,” he wrote.
The rapper said the controversial scene involving two women kissing goes against his personal beliefs, African culture, and moral values. He admitted that public anger over the video was valid and said he also believes artists must be held accountable.
At the same time, Macky 2 maintained that Yo Maps should still be given room to learn from his mistakes instead of being completely condemned.
“Accountability and grace can coexist,” he stated, adding that calling out wrongdoing should not automatically mean destroying a person entirely.
The debate has since sparked wider conversations online about celebrity responsibility, Zambian cultural values, cancellation culture, and how society should respond when public figures make controversial decisions.
JUST TO UNLOCK YOUR MIND
This controversy shows how difficult it has become for public figures to balance loyalty, morality, and public opinion in the social media age.
Macky 2’s first message focused on Yo Maps’ character and contributions, but many fans were more interested in hearing a direct condemnation of the controversial content itself. The pressure became so intense that he had to issue a second statement to separate “supporting a person” from “supporting an action.”
In today’s digital world, celebrities are no longer judged only by what they do but also by what they fail to condemn clearly enough.
