The Ministry of Defence has handed over 190 newly built and fully furnished housing units to the Zambia Army at Kenneth David Kaunda Barracks, commonly known as Mikango Barracks, in Chongwe District.

The new houses include 10 high-cost, 62 medium-cost, and 118 low-cost units. They were constructed by Zhongmei Engineering Group under a contract awarded by the Ministry of Defence.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu said the houses are now ready for occupation by officers and non-commissioned officers.

Mr. Haamaundu said the project is part of government's efforts to reduce the housing shortage for military personnel and improve their living conditions.

He also revealed that more than 600 housing units are nearing completion at Buffalo Park Barracks in Lusaka's Chalala area.

According to Mr. Haamaundu, the water and sewerage infrastructure being installed at Buffalo Park will also benefit residents of Chalala, Chilenje, and surrounding communities.

He said government remains committed to providing modern accommodation for personnel across all defence services to motivate them as they safeguard Zambia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele, in a speech read on his behalf by Brigadier General Maybin Muyanga, thanked the government for the investment.

He said decent housing is a morale booster and supports the Army's vision of building a modern and professional military.

According to a statement issued by ministry of Defence Principle Public Relations Officer Paul Shalala, Zhongmei Engineering Group Project Manager Ye Xinjin said the company successfully completed the project on schedule through close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development.

Mr. Xinjin added that the company will continue maintaining the houses even after they have been handed over.
