LUSAKA, July 9, 2026 - The Government has confirmed that Vice-President Dr. W.K. Mutale Nalumango is safe and in good health after a Zambia Air Force (ZAF) helicopter she was travelling in was involved in an accident during take-off in Nakonde, Muchinga Province, on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick K. Kangwa, the incident occurred while the Vice-President was on an official visit to the region.
"The Government of the Republic of Zambia wishes to inform the members of the public that earlier today, the Zambia Air Force helicopter carrying Her Honour The Vice-President, Dr. W.K. Mutale Nalumango, had an accident at take-off in Nakonde, Muchinga Province during an official visit to the region," the statement read.
Government said the Vice-President, together with all passengers and crew members, escaped the incident without injury.
"Her Honour the Vice-President and all passengers and crew are safe and well. As a standard precaution, she was taken to a nearby medical facility for a routine check and has since been discharged. The Vice-President is in good health," Mr. Kangwa said.
The Government also praised the professionalism of the flight crew and emergency responders, while thanking residents of Nakonde for their quick response following the accident.
Speaking after the incident, the vide president reassured the nation that she was in good health and dismissed reports suggesting she had been admitted to hospital.
"I'm not in hospital, I'm fine. We are fine. Zambians that love us, we are fine. Even if you are in opposition, I'm sure you are happy that we are fine. I'm sure we are all rejoicing," she said.
The Vice-President acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident but expressed gratitude that everyone on board survived.
"It has happened and God has done His own. Trauma is there when you go through such a thing, but so far I'm well. All things being equal, we will continue with our programmes. God is faithful. We were eight and we are fine. Doctors checked me and all my vitals were normal. My blood pressure and sugar levels were normal," she said.
Mr. Kangwa said, "the relevant authorities will establish the circumstances of the incident in the normal way,"
