The United States has praised Zambia for holding peaceful elections on August 13, 2026, while signalling continued support for the country’s defence and military modernisation.

Executive Director to the Deputy Under Secretary of the United States Air Force for International Affairs, Mr. Eugene Park, said the US was proud of the Zambian people for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

Mr. Park said this when he paid a courtesy call at the Ministry of Defence in Lusaka.

“Zambia is a priority country for the United States. We have had over 60 years of bilateral relations. We are ready to work with you and support the modernisation of the Zambian military,” he said.

Mr. Park also praised Zambia’s growing role in international military engagements, particularly its hosting of the Africa Land Forces Summit in 2024 and the African Air Chiefs Symposium in 2026.

The comments come as Zambia and the United States continue to deepen defence cooperation through military training, infrastructure development and international security engagements.

Acting Defence Permanent Secretary Mrs. Milicent Mwenda said the relationship between the two countries was growing every year.

“Zambian military personnel have had opportunities to train in the United States,” she said.

Mrs. Mwenda also thanked the US Government for supporting infrastructure development at the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Centre in Lusaka.

“We wish to thank the American government for the various infrastructure they recently handed over at the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Center in Lusaka. That infrastructure cost millions of dollars and we appreciate so much,” she said.

JUST TO UNLOCK YOUR MIND

Desptite the UN being "shocked" of Zambia’s post elections  events such as the "fatal killing of former cabinet minister  Mutotwe Kafwaya and the arrest of Brian Mundubile  and his vice, Makebi Zulu on treason charges," Zambia’s peaceful elections have earned international recognition, while its defence partnership with the United States is moving towards deeper military cooperation and modernisation.
