"We don't want hijackers," Sampa
The Miles Sampa–led Patriotic Front yesterday appointed Charity Katongo Banda as the new Vice National Chairperson, a move that immediately stirred fresh political waves within the already fractured opposition party.
In her acceptance statement, Ms. Banda thanked Party President Miles Bwalya Sampa for the confidence placed in her and urged PF members to rebuild unity and rediscover the collective spirit once championed by the party’s late founding leader, Michael Chilufya Sata.
She pledged to promote reconciliation and teamwork, emphasising that the PF’s strength rests on shared values rather than personal ambitions.
But the announcement came with a political twist. In what many are calling another “Mbappe by Sampa,” Mr. Sampa declared himself the only legal PF president citing the 27th March 2026 High Court ruling that upheld the legality of the 2023 convention which ushered him into leadership.
Using this interpretation, he dissolved all party appointments and installed new ones, including naming South Africa–based PF member Willah Mudolo into the MCC.
Sampa argued that since he once handed over the PF to former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, and with Mr. Lungu’s passing, “he will now hand the party back to himself.”
Meanwhile, jailed PF official Raphael Nakachinda has appealed the same 27th March ruling, insisting the judge “erred in facts,” setting the stage for yet another internal showdown.

The PF is now split into three rival factions: the Robert Chabinga faction, the Makebi Zulu faction, and the Miles Sampa faction. Among the three, only the Robert Chabinga faction is legally recognised by the Registrar of Societies and currently holds the valid party documents.
