MULUNGUSHI TEXTILES SEES SURGE IN ELECTION-YEAR BUSINESS AS GOVERNMENT EYES LARGE-SCALE EXPANSION

Mulungushi Textiles has recorded a sharp rise in commercial activity ahead of the 2026 general elections, with demand for printed materials increasing from both political and private-sector customers. According to management, the company has so far received eight major orders three of which are from political parties preparing campaign regalia and branded supplies.

General manager Yang Yitong confirmed that the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) is among the clients but declined to name the other political parties, citing confidentiality. He noted that Mulungushi Textiles has adopted a strict first-come, first-served policy to maintain fairness as orders grow during the election period.

The spike in business follows the company’s resurgence after years of inactivity, and management says the renewed interest—locally and internationally—signals both market confidence and broader economic activity in the province.

But government officials say the current momentum is only the beginning of a much bigger industrial ambition.

Central Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe revealed that Mulungushi Textiles is being prepared for transformation into a fully-fledged multi-facility economic zone (MFEZ). The long-term plan expands the company’s mandate far beyond textiles to include agro-processing and value-addition ventures.

Proposed product lines include tomato paste, watermelon juice and other agro-industrial goods, signalling a shift toward diversified manufacturing. Dr. Mwanakampwe says the broader objective is to turn the plant into a regional industrial hub that stimulates investment, expands the local supply chain and supports large-scale job creation.

He made the remarks during an inspection tour of the revamped facility, where he noted that the government’s industrialisation strategy is anchored on ensuring that old industrial assets like Mulungushi Textiles are repositioned for modern economic opportunities.

With elections approaching and long-term expansion on the horizon, Mulungushi Textiles is simultaneously benefiting from short-term political demand and preparing for a deeper role in Zambia’s manufacturing landscape.
