President Hakainde Hichilema has officially reopened the Zambia–China Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe after nearly 20 years of inactivity, marking a major step in reviving the country’s manufacturing sector.

Speaking during the commissioning today in Kabwe, the President directed Defence and Security Wings to begin producing uniforms locally from the plant. He also instructed the Ministry of Health to ensure that uniforms for medical personnel, including nurses, are sourced from the facility.

President Hichilema said government will no longer allow the procurement of uniforms from outside the country, emphasizing the need to support local industries. He assured that government will guarantee business for the plant to ensure its sustainability and continued operations.

He stressed that the reopening of Mulungushi Textiles is permanent, unlike in the past when the plant was only revived temporarily during election periods. The President described it as unfortunate that such a key national asset had remained dormant for nearly two decades.

President Hichilema thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for the partnership that made the revival possible, following engagements during his visit to China in 2023.

He added that the plant, currently under phase one of its revamping programme, will soon be expanded to include additional facilities such as a ginner.
