President Hakainde Hichilema has confirmed his acceptance of the UPND’s endorsement for the upcoming general elections, saying the mandate was entrusted to him by the people of Zambia.
His confirmation came shortly after the party’s electoral body announced that he had gone through the nomination process unopposed.
In his address, President Hichilema said the endorsement represents the hopes and expectations of citizens across the country.
“I take this responsibility with humility and gratitude. I dedicate it to every Zambian who aspires for a better nation. Today is not just about the party it is about all 21 million of our citizens,” said Hichilema
He reflected on the challenges faced over the past four and a half years, noting that the journey had demanded resilience, but had also given the nation a chance to rebuild. He added that the period leading to August 13 offers another chance for the country to reinforce the progress achieved so far.
According to him, the priority moving forward is to unite the nation and continue improving the quality of life for all Zambians.
Meanwhile, UPND electoral commission representative Isaac Mwanza announced that the President had been duly confirmed as the party’s choice. Mwanza also revealed that the commission examined three petitions submitted during the process but dismissed them on grounds that they lacked substance and did not meet the required threshold.
JUST TO UNLOCK YOUR MIND
President Hichilema is expected to remain UPND president until the party's next general assembly in 2031.
Should he win the 2026 elections, this will be his last term to contest for the country’s presidency - automatically making it impossible for him to continue leading UPND beyond 2031.
He will play a huge role in selecting his successor even though the party will still go through the same process as many will fill nominations for the presidency.
