GARY NKOMBO: I LOVE THE PRESIDENT, HE'S MY BOSS

Every time Garry Nkombo opens his mouth in public, he takes over social media headlines. This is because he rarely comments on issues surrounding his political agenda - but when he does, he starts trending.

Yesterday, when he officially marked his campaign journey to defend his Mazabuka Central seat, what was heavily picked by the media were his comments about himself, President Hichilema, and the UPND.

He somehow dropped a pipe bomb - one that sounded very bitter to oppositions who thought they could use him to penetrate Southern Province. He officially endorsed President Hakainde Hichilema and backed him to win the mouthwatering August polls.

He also clarified his relationship with the President, saying he was beaten for him during opposition days when he was arrested, the kind of beatings that saw Nkombo taken to UTH at midnight.

He told voters that he loves the president, and if the president does not love him, there is nothing he can do.

Last year, in March 2025, the president shook the country when he fired Nkombo as Local Government Minister. Since then, there have been questions about what led to that daring dismissal. Yesterday, he said people claim the reason he has not spoken publicly about his fall or his now unpredictable relationship with the President, especially the firing , which he committed serious, unforgivable sins. He insisted he did not do anything at all. He said the President has the power to appoint and dismiss ministers. Therefore, he does not need to question why he was fired.

He vowed to work with the president once he is voted in as MP in August, saying the president is his boss and they must work together.

On his UPND status, he said that due to being an independent candidate, the law requires him not to be affiliated with any political party, meaning he has temporarily left what he called his “blood party.”

JUST TO UNLOCK YOUR MIND

Garry Nkombo is now being accused of using President Hichilema’s name to gain sympathy from voters. Others argue that people in Southern Province are loyal to the party rather than individual candidates, meaning he has no choice but to lean on the President’s name during campaigns.

LIKANDO MUFALALI, the UPND chairman for elections and campaigns, the man who replaced Nkombo on the powerful UPND position, said Gary Nkombo was not fired. He was not blocked. He did not just apply to contest.

Again, just to remind you, Nkombo only decided to run for the Mazabuka Central after voters raised funds and asked him to file in as independent.

The next “pipe bomb” moment, according to political observers, will be when the president visits Mazabuka for campaigns and whether he will explicitly tell supporters to vote for Nkombo or for the UPND candidate.
