Two Tanzanian nationals have been fined K100,000 each after a Nakonde human-smuggling operation was uncovered, the Immigration department has revealed.
A Zambian national was also arrested for assisting a foreigner to enter the country illegally.
The pair, Kija Ally Hamza, 32, and Rubagumya Philbert Faustine, 39 were convicted on 27th March for aiding and abetting illegal immigrants. If they fail to pay the fines, they will serve nine months in prison.
According to the statement seen by Brave Heart News, their conviction rooted from a joint operation on 3rd March in which Immigration officers and the Drug Enforcement Commission intercepted two fuel tankers carrying 21 Ethiopian nationals hidden in compartments.
The Immigration Department has since escalated nationwide enforcement between 2nd and 6th April, leading to 105 arrests, 47 removals, 23 convictions, and 11 refusals of entry.
Most of those apprehended were from the DR Congo, Burundi, Tanzania, Malawi and Zimbabwe, with offences ranging from illegal entry and unlawful stay to forged documents and breaches of permit conditions.
A Zambian national was also arrested for assisting a foreigner to enter the country illegally.
At Kasumbalesa Border Control, a Congolese suspect was found with multiple Zambian IDs and accused of misrepresenting his identity to officials. He is in custody awaiting prosecution.
In a separate incident at Chembe Border Control, a Zambian man, Chola Evans, was arrested for helping a Congolese national who attempted to enter Zambia while posing as a citizen. Both were detained after officers discovered foreign identification.
Most removals during the period involved Malawian and Congolese nationals, while Zimbabweans and Congolese topped the list of those denied entry over invalid documents, unclear travel motives and previous violations.
