NAIROBI, KENYA - Kenya has started a four-day meeting with COMESA and the World Bank to discuss how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other new technologies can be used to improve lives while ensuring that everyone benefits from the digital economy.

According to the statementreleased, Kenya’s Director of ICT, Timothy Were, said AI is already changing sectors such as agriculture, health, education, financial services and public administration.

He said Kenya wants digital transformation to be responsible, inclusive and secure, with strong protection for personal data, cybersecurity and digital rights.

COMESA Telecommunications Officer Leonard Chitundu praised Kenya’s progress in areas such as mobile money and digital services, saying the country’s experience can help shape regional policies on AI and digital inclusion.

The first part of the workshop is focusing on AI opportunities, national readiness and policy gaps, while the final sessions will look at digital inclusion, especially for women, youth, persons with disabilities, rural communities, refugees and small businesses.

The discussions are expected to produce recommendations that will help Kenya and COMESA develop regional guidelines and strategies for the safe and inclusive use of AI and digital technologies.

For businesses, especially SMEs, the talks could help create a more supportive digital environment with better access to technology, digital services and regional opportunities as Eastern and Southern Africa moves toward a more connected digital economy.
