The Alliance for Accountability Advocates Zambia (AAAZ) has called on the government to uphold strong transparency and accountability standards as it implements reforms supported by the World Bank’s recently approved US$45 million Development Policy Operation.

In a statement shared to Brave Heart News, AAAZ said the reforms aimed at strengthening fiscal governance, boosting private-sector investment and improving disaster-preparedness systems represent a major opportunity for economic recovery, but must be backed by strict oversight and citizen participation to ensure public resources are managed responsibly.

The organisation calls for transparency in World Bank-Supported Reforms, Commends 24-Hour Economy Initiative and Youth Mentorship Drive. It also applauded the Cabinet’s approval of a 24-hour economy, noting that extended operating hours could stimulate SME growth and youth entrepreneurship.

However, it urged the government to reinforce security, transport, and energy systems to make the transition safe and workable for businesses.

AAAZ further commended President Hakainde Hichilema’s push for expanded internship and mentorship programmes for young people but stressed the need for effective implementation and meaningful participation beyond symbolic inclusion.

The organisation said it remains ready to support the government through capacity-building initiatives that prepare young people for leadership and parliamentary engagement.

Zambia’s reform agenda has gained momentum after the World Bank approved US$45 million in budget support to strengthen fiscal management, expand private-sector investment, and reinforce climate resilience.

The government says the financing reflects rising international confidence in Zambia’s economic direction and ongoing reforms under the G20 Common Framework. Meanwhile,

Zambia has begun rolling out its 24-hour economy in phases, starting with the retail and service sectors. Govt says the policy is designed to boost productivity and jobs, with implementation guided by security considerations and feedback from businesses.
